Birds of Ecuador

IMG3241

Hope is the thing with feathers

That perches in the soul,

And sings the tune without the words,

And never stops at all.

(Emily Dickinson)

1600 bird species are found on the Ecuador mainland...a country a bit smaller than the state of Nevada.

38 more endemic species are found on the Galapagos Islands.

Ecuador straddles the equator (hence the name) and has an estimated 14.6 million people.

The climate is highly variable...according to altitude.

Three geographic regions are found...plus the Galapagos Islands:

i) low-lying coast to the west.

ii) sierra highlands running north-south in the center.

iii) Amazonian rain forest in the east.

A megadiverse country with more biodiversity per sq. km of any nation.

Things to like about Ecuador:

The birding lodges are outstanding, perhaps the best of any of our birding trips and the food is very good.

The birding is terrific.

Juan Carlos is an excellent guide perhaps the best in Ecuador. If you're thinking of a birding trip there, contact Juan Carlos (juancarloscalvachi1@gmail.com). He will find the birds for you.

The roads are generally very good.

Ecuador uses American dollars.

Travel there from the U.S. is easy and Quito has a brand new airport.
