a
Gray-headed Bushshrike
Malaconotus blanchoti
(L 9-10")
Lake Naivasha area
20Oct2014
Very large range in dry and wet and
savannahs in Sub-Saharan Africa...may
sing “whoo” song 50 times in a row.
If I could come back as anything - I‘d be
a bird, first, but definitely the command
key is my second choice.
(Nikki Giovanni)
Malaconotus in Greek means soft,
elongated rump feathers;
blanchoti is after P. Blanchot,
French Governor of Senegal, 1790.

Soft rump feathers distinguish
the bush shrikes from the true
shrikes. (James A Jobling)
