The race is not to the swift, nor the
battle to the strong.
(Ecclesiastes 9:11)
“The race is not always to the swift,
nor the battle to the strong, but that’s
the way to bet.”
(Damon Runyon)
Resemble flying cigars...migrate
long distances to winter in Peru.
Chaetura in Greek means long
flowing hair, i.e., the swifts
tail; pelagica in Latin means
marine.

Has declined precipitously across
the majority of its
range...perhaps related to the
alteration of the insect
community due to pesticide use.
