Northern Bobwhite
Colinus virginianus
 (L 9.75" WS 13" WT 6 oz)
Morton Arboretum
Lisle
15Sep2006
I see you, on the zigzag rails,
  You cheery little fellow!
While purple leaves are whirling down,
  And scarlet, brown, and yellow.
I hear you when the air is full
  Of snow-down of the thistle;
All in your speckled jacket trim,
“Bob White! Bob White!” you whistle.
         (Bob White by George Cooper)
Official game bird of Tennessee,
Georgia and Washington... over-
hunting can be a problem.
Colinus in Nahuatl (Mexican)
Indian means
quail; virginianus
is after the Virginia colonies.
