Eastern Whip-poor-will
Antrostomus vociferus
 (L 9.75" WS 19" Wt 1.9 oz)
Magee Marsh
Ohio
16May2013
Endless chanting at night...easy to
hear but hard to see...recently
separated from the Mexican species.
Where deep and misty shadows float
In forest’s depths is heard thy note.
Like a lost spirit, earthbound still,
Art thou, mysterious whip-poor-will.
        (Marie Le Baron)
Antrostomus is Greek for
cavern mouth; viciferus is
Latin for
clamorous.
