In August 2011, a monitored whimbrel
named Hope dove straight into Tropical
Storm Gert off the coast of Nova Scotia at
7 miles per hour and emerged from the
other side at 90 m.p.h. Not long after, sci-
entists cheered as four other whimbrels
successfully navigated their way through
Hurricane Irene.
