Selasphorus in Greek means carrying a
bright flame or a flash of lightning;
platycercus in Greek means broad-tailed.

In non-scientific observations, sugar water
made in glass vessels instead of metal pots
led to an increased hummer activity at our
feeder. At least one other person has
reported the same.
