• Belgian naturalist, born in Brussels of an ancient
noble family.
• traveled in Peru from 1841-1843.
• collected for the Royal Academy of Brussels and
the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp.
- earned him the “Cross of Leopold” in 1846
• the Wire-crested Thorntail, Discosura popelairii, is
named in his honor.
