Belted Kingfisher
Ceryle alcyon
(L 13" WS 20" Wt 5 oz)
Merritt Island Nat'l
Wildlife Refuge
One of the few species (of
birds that is) where the female
has brighter colors.
Note: photos of a female with
a rufous band across the chest
and flanks.
That kingfisher jewelling upstream
seems to leave a streak of itself
in the bright air. The trees
are all the better for its passing.
