Heliangelus exortis
(L 4.25" Wt 0.13-0.30 oz)
Found only in Columbia and
Ecuador...at 2300-3100 m
...note the bright purple
throat patch.
Heliangelus in Greek means sun
angel; exortis in Latin means to
rise, likening the rosy throat
spot to the rising sun.
The iridescent color of hummingbirds,
for example, is produced by the angle
of refracted and reflected light.
