In August 2011, a monitored whimbrel
named Hope dove straight into Tropical
Storm Gert off the coast of Nova Scotia
at 7 miles per hour and emerged from
the other side at 90 m.p.h. Not long
after, scientists cheered as four other
whimbrels successfully navigated their
way through Hurricane Irene.

Numenius in Greek is a bird
mentioned by Hesychius;
phaeopus is Greek for dusky,
gray-brown foot.
