 Whinchat
Saxicola rubetra
(L 4.7-5.5" Wt 0.5-9 ozs)
Once considered a thrush but
now a flycatcher ...winters in
sub-Sharan Africa.
There’s a small, passerine bird
Called a whinchat, which does exactly
That: speaks to weather of wind and seed.
Brown and buff above,
With streaks of white below,
This tiny creature brazenly insists
On its right to be heard.
Loudmouth? Maybe.
Bright-eyed? Certainly.
